Ent-DHEA sulfate
Ent-Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (sodium salt)
Ent-DHEA Sulfate (Ent-Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate) is an enantiomer of the compound DHEA Sulfate (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate).
Enantiomers are optical isomers, which are a type of stereoisomers. They are a pair of symmetrical, when it comes to structure, compounds that are mirror images of one another. They cannot be overlaid. Enantiomers have identical chemical properties, except for their ability to rotate plane-polarized light by equal amounts but in opposite directions.
DHEA sulfate is an endogenous steroid, which is the predominant product of the adrenal cortex and is the major circulating precursor for active steroid hormones in the human body. The metabolite is obtained from DHEA through a process of conjugation with sulfate.
As a conjugated derivative, DHEA sulfate is devoid of hormonal activity, because it lacks affinity for steroid hormone receptors. Although the conjugate is hormonally inert, it appears to show activity as a neurosteroid and neurotrophin.
Circulating concentrations of DHEA sulfate are found to be dramatically increased in cases of adrenocortical disorders.
The enantiomer Ent-DHEA Sulfate is intended for use in research on DHEA sulfate behavior and functions, in addition to the effects of other steroid hormones.
